Mentoring Opportunity

  Q2 June 2009

FOLLOW UP TO MENTORS, MAVENS & MAGI

The Mentors Mavens & Magi event was a wonderful venue for me to meet some of you as well as the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues that I haven’t seen for some time. Following that event, I met with several individuals and as a result of those meetings have some great information to share with you.

Volunteer as a Mentor

It’s important to continue to focus on what you can do to manage your career in difficult times. For those who are interested in developing your leadership style through mentoring others, the University of Calgary’s “Women’s Resource Centre” has a very exciting women’s mentoring program and they are currently looking for women interested in being a mentor to a graduating student from September to December 2009. I met with Jocelyn Kelln and Stephanie Garrett to hear more about the “Women Guiding Women” program.

WGW is a first-class mentorship program that pairs female U of C students in the last phase of their degree with successful women leaders in the community and supports them in establishing mentoring relationships. Protégés and mentors attend unique leadership seminars with well-known local and international guest speakers and facilitators.  Jocelyn and Stephanie are currently seeking women leaders interested in mentoring in all disciplines, sectors and fields. For more information or to download an application, please visit www.ucalgary.ca/women/wgw or contact them directly by e-mail at women@ucalgary.ca or by telephone at (403)220-8551.

SAIT DELIVERS PROGRAMS TO WOMEN IN AFGHANISTAN

I was delighted when Janet Sainsbury of SAIT contacted me after the last newsletter went out and as a result I met with her and long time colleague Judy Adams. Both Janet & Judy work in the Continuing Education programs with SAIT. SAIT was approached to deliver online courses in an effort to provide education to a small school in residential Kandahar to meet the needs of women there. By January 2007 the Afghan Canadian Community Centre was established and the first courses offered were courses such as Project Management. Because of the success of the program, students increased from 12 in the first class to 100 in 2007 to 700 by mid 2008. Today courses are offered in Business Management, IT, English and Health Care. For more information, contact Judy Adams or Janet Sainsbury or go to www.theafghanschool.org.

PROGRAMS & EVENTS

Golf Game

If you love the game of golf and want to play a round after work and network with some of Calgary’s businesswomen, let me know. I’ve spoken with Sonia Tibbatts of the Royal Bank and she has agreed to assist me with setting up some tee times at the beautiful Silver Springs Golf Course. We only spoke briefly so details haven’t been ironed out yet but I expect the date will be late summer (August) or early Fall (September). If you are interested in being included in the invite to play, email me at leibham.and.company@shaw.ca and I’ll see that you get the information. This is not a tournament -- we’ll set it up as tee times plus dinner afterwards. You need to just have some golfing experience – but beyond that – the idea is just to have some fun and network over dinner.

Career Management Coaching

Have you carved your career path? How does your career fit in with your overall goals in life? Are you achieving everything that you want to achieve in your career? In these coaching sessions, you’ll take a close look at what’s important to you in your career, where you want to go in your work life, and how it fits with your overall goals in life. Four individual coaching sessions are scheduled. Fees for the career coaching sessions have been adjusted in response to the downturn in the economy. Contact me if you would like more information.
